"Celui qui n’a pas une culture est semblable a un arbre sans racine. Car en Afrique la famille c’est toute une culture" - Maclade Bezy

"A person without culture is similar to a tree without roots. Because in Africa a family is a whole culture" - Maclade Bezy

Maclade Bezy is a ceramicist and sculptor working for over 30 years. Born into large family in Kinshasha in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he first trained with his father who was a ceramic and wood artist.

In the late seventies Maclade trained as a ceramicist at the Kinshasha Academy Des-Beau-Arts, developing an original and personal style. He works predominantly in clay but also uses painting and drawing as his tools. His pieces depict his African heritage, drawing on form, textures and proportion reflect everyday life in Africa. He draws these elements into his ceramics, masks, using distinct shapes, earthly colours and gestures to reflect a certain mood and feel of the human experience.
