ABOUT US - WHAT WE DO
CULTURAL PRODUCTION - Participatory Arts For over 25 years, CAN has produced an impressive portfolio of contemporary and imaginative urban arts based collaborations with communities, artists, craftspeople and agencies. The work spans a wide range of art forms, such as:
CAN is committed to producing work that has the highest possible production values. We are also interested in working with people to develop audiences, in other words, who is the work for and how does it communicate to people that might not have been directly involved in the process. We recognise that the North West is a hotbed of talent, ideas and potential, with an amazing history of 'do it yourself' culture and art that has 'come up from the street'. Participatory arts work can make ideas happen, create pride and respect, raise aspirations, develop confidence, communicate and share the narrative of peoples lives, and most importantly create really enjoyable times. ARTS DEVELOPMENT AND PARTNERSHIPS - Cultures of Co-operation Arts development involves developing the rationale, building the relationships and networks, and ultimately achieving the funding and resources for the programmes of work. CAN work in partnership with agencies and funders that work for the benefit of our client groups, to maximise the potential for the funding of community arts and its sustainability. Programmes of work are closely allied to the aims and objectives of the people we work with, connecting groups and individuals to the economic arts infrastructure, networks and mainstream arts resources. Advocating and procuring cultural opportunities for communities, such as resources, training, employment and organisational development. From CAN's experience, the key to quality work is dependent on the quality of the partnerships; partnerships between communities, artists, agencies and other arts based resources. We put our relationship with communities first - and we are interested in real engagement. At CAN we work together for change with respect. Not always easy, we have a few simple rules:
INFORMATION AND ADVICE We offer a free information and advisory service that can connect you to funding, artists and resources. More on information and advice//>
DIGITAL MEDIA LAB Due to our recently successful capitol programme CAN is now in the unique position of having its own digital media resources. This is a first for participatory arts based work in Manchester, which until recently has had to struggle for the facility to produce work. Our current artistic programme will pilot the development and use of the resources which will inform future policy. As a small organisation, our capacity will be limited; therefore we will prioritise artists developing work with communities and voluntary sector groups who are part of our programmes of work and networks. Artists of African, Caribbean, South and Far East Asian heritage, communities new to Britain such as Refugee and Asylum seekers.and other culturally diverse communities. Artists from socially excluded communities, such as homeless people. Progression routes include:
